The Syracuse MileThe opening of the Saratoga Automobile Museum's new "Syracus e Mile" exhibit has been set for Sunday, January 20th in conjunction with the annual introduction of the New York State Stock Car Association's newest Hall of Fame members at the permanent Hall of Fame display in the museum's Racing in New York gallery. The "Double Features" program will kick off at 11 am with the unveiling of the photos and nameplates of noted journalist Les Deuel, car owner Art Barry, drivers Buzzie Reutimann, Maynard Troyer and Bob McCreadie, to be inducted the night before at the huge NYSSCA awards banquet in Albany. The program will include remarks by the inductees able to attend. Attention will then turn to the new SYRACUSE MILE exhibit featuring two of Syracuse's most famous stock cars. One is the '33 Ford coupe, on loan from historian and collector Jeff Ackerman, that Hall of Fame member Cliff Kotary drove to one of his chart-topping six State Fair victories at Syracuse. Alongside will be Gary Balough's legendary "Batmobile," on loan from the DIRT Hall of Fame and Museum in Weedsport, that changed modified racing forever. The duo will be joined by a gleaming Offy-powered USAC championship car, courtesy of Urbana, Ohio historian Bob McConnell, that was driven by Ronnie Duman, Billy Foster, Len Sutton, Bob Harkey, Lloyd Ruby, Ralph Ligouri and New York ace Jim Hurtubise. The exhibit also features a variety of graphics and memorabilia which, along with huge text panels, will help bring the story of the fabled New York State Fairgrounds track to life. Further information on the Saratoga Automobile Museum, located on the Avenue of the Pines in the Saratoga Spa State Park just off Exit 13N of I-87, the Adirondack Northway, is available on-line at www.saratogaautomuseum.org.

automontage by David Val SchlinkThe Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga Springs, NY, ho sts a personal photographic project, automontage, in its new gallery and orientation theater beginning June 7th, 2008. Accomplished commercial photographer and automotive enthusiast David Val Schlink, of Morris County, NJ, has selected 30 images of favorite automobiles from the classic era through the 1980s that illustrate his "automontage" concept - the interplay of light and shadow, reflections and surroundings, in the mirror-like surfaces of the world's outstanding cars. "Photographically, for me, these images that capture both the car and the place, where something of the setting is seen in the automobile's surfaces, I call automontage. Sometimes the effect is a subtle one, but I love seeing it in these extraordinary cars." Although David Val Schlink has photographed cars for 35 years, he began this project in 2000, using digital cameras throughout. The selection on display features motifs printed and framed as pages from an imagined book. "As I reviewed my automotive 'take' of the past eight years, I saw this theme emerge, that of cars reflecting their settings and environments. I liked the effect of these exceptional automobile's surfaces giving the viewer a sense of place and atmosphere." Schlink adds, "automontage is simply my word for what I find to be a visually-transporting effect - these digital images are of motifs as I found and photographed them, with virtually no photo manipulation involved other than to prepare them for printing with the computer." The exhibition also includes a compelling photographic display of famous cars' steering wheels and instrument panels or, as Schlink describes them, "dashboards I have known and loved." In addition to his work shooting designer interiors, he enjoys teaching hands-on digital photography workshops, with an emphasis on camera work that delivers a range of subjects "in the best possible light." Schlink's photography has been featured in Fortune 500 corporate publications, as well as in NJ CEO, Design NJ, New Jersey Home and Style, Hunterdon Life and New York Spaces. For further information, David can be contacted at www.automontage.com --- ______________________________________________________ automontage "I've always enjoyed looking at cars. And photographing them. Especially those unbelievably shiny ones, with wonderful lines and contours. Over the years, I've shot a great many favorites. And I tried to find them, indoors or out, as if lit in a studio --- I was after the kind of light that was even overall, and forgiving, exposure-wise. A day with a high, bright overcast would be perfect for what I was after, back then. But as time went on, I came to appreciate a car reflecting its setting. That is, when its perfectly smooth surfaces show its surroundings --- perhaps palm fronds, or a canopy of branches or billowing clouds overhead, or dramatic windows nearby. Or architectural elements, mirrored in that gorgeous sheet metal, creating a Dali-esque effect. And I saw that even the atmosphere of a place could be conveyed, too, as shown in a racing car's hood, its color muted by low-lying fog in the early hours. Or on bright, curvaceous panels, sparkling with morning mist. Seeing this result, in the camera's viewfinder, can make for a fascinating visual experience. Photographically, these images that capture both the car and the place, where something of the setting is seen in the automobile's surfaces, I call automontage. Sometimes the effect is a subtle one, but I love seeing it in these extraordinary cars. I hope you will, too. " David Val Schlink
