Third Annual Art ExhibitionOn July 18th, at 6pm, the 808 Gallery will open its doors to exhibit the fresh face of Boston contemporary art. The third annual juried Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition (BYC) represents eleven New England Master of Fine Arts and Post-Baccalaureate programs. This year's show includes over 90 emerging East Coast artists and encompasses a variety of contemporary painting, photography, video, and sculpture. Along with 159 artworks, and live music performed by DJ Ari Joseph, the BYC in a combined effort with Whole Foods Market will feature an edible instillation commenting on environmental degradation. Play Along: Singing & Dancing for Children Ages 3-10Cafe 939 is pleased to announce a free lunchtime workshop/en tertainment series for children. The two summer 2008 events are geared towards children ages 6-10. During these sessions, Berklee Music Education students, led by professor Libby Allison, will have an opportunity to practice their skills in this fun, performance-style setting. The Cafe 939 lunch menu will include kid-friendly fare for these events. Join us for some summer fun with an educational twist. Space is limited, so please arrive early. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Read Boston Story Mobile in Chinatown ParkHello Friends near Chinatown Park,This summer the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy has arranged to have the City of Boston's Read Boston Story Mobile in the Greenway Parks. Every Monday afternoon at 1:15 in Chinatown Park, the van will be parked on the Kingston/Edinborough Road directly adjacent to the park and will read stories for a 45 minute session. At the end of the session, books are distributed to the children in attendance. The age level is three to twelve years old and all are welcome. Boston Public Schools Financial Aid Workshop for FamiliesBoston Public Schools (BPS) will host a free workshop to hel p recent high school graduates seek financial aid for college. The workshop is designed to help families identify alternatives to Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA) loans, after a recent announcement that these loans are not available this year. BPS will also offer this workshop on Monday, August 18 at the Hyde Park Education Complex.

Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park Morning SeriesCelebrate Franklin Park and the legacy of Elma Lewis at the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park summer performance series. Each morning, performances geared toward young audiences from camps, groups and families include drum callers, African, Latin, contemporary and jazz dancing, twirlers, and more. The evening performances will entertain the whole family with African dance, drumming, rhythm & blues, jazz, folk and blues. July 15, 10:30 a.m. Frederick Hayes Dance Company The Frederick Hayes Dance Company is a group of multigenerational dancers that welcomes performers with physical challenges, encouraging participants to dance despite these challenges. Hayes grew up in Roxbury and now spreads his creative wings in the communities of Boston. As director of the Reggie Lewis Center's dance program, Hayes' works to make dance accessible to everyone. The compan July 22, 10:30 a.m. Stephen O'Neal & IntaAfrika plus Marcos Santos and Batukaxe' African drummer Stephen O'Neal has been part of the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts' annual performance of Langston Hughes' "Black Nativity" since the beginning in 1970. O'Neal and drummer Salim Abdul-Rahman were students of the world renowned M. Babatunde Olatunji. O'Neal is the co-founder of IntaAfrika which has a 15 year history in the community. Joined by his 13 year old son, Stephen Korliss, the group has traveled extensively, with stops in Senegal and Gambia. Afro-Brazilian ensemble Batukaxé presents a modern style of the authentic tradition of Blocos Afro and Axe music. Marcus Santos and Sandro Scoccia created Batukaxé as part of AfroBrazil.org,, an organization whose goal is to preserve, promote, and strengthen the Afro-Brazilian culture in the U.S. Developed in the state of Bahia, this music is rooted in the tradition of the Carnival Blocos Afro, groups of vocalists and percussionists performing Brazilian rhythms based on African roots. July 29 10:30 a.m. - Fuerza International and Estrellas Tropicales The young people from Boston's neighborhoods in Fuerza International perform traditional and modern dance from Puerto Rico to Santo Domingo. Then, the batons will be flying as one of Boston's premiere baton-twirling groups, Estrellas Tropicales performs. August 5, 10:30 a.m. A. Major Dance Performances on Aug. 5 take place inside the Franklin Park Zoo, which has free admission all day as part of National Night Out.* This local dance company celebrates over 40 years of training young artists for the local and national dance stage. Major dancers have gone on to perform on stages with "Bring in the Noise, Bring in the Funk," Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Essence Music Awards, Broadway's "A Few Good Men" and Debbie Allen's musical "Soul Possessed." August 12, 6 p.m. Andre Ward Take a seasoned musician who can play the soprano, alto and tenor saxophone with skilled ease and passion and mix in varied elements of gospel, jazz, R & B and you have Boston's own Chicago-born, Berklee trained Andre Ward. An accomplished purveyor of smooth jazz, Ward has performed for delighted audiences all over the world. One World Summer Enrichment ProgramJoin One World, providing Boston area children aged 4-10 fr ee access to culture and the arts, within the context of The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
