Treasure! Your hunt has just begun!...Now Open!Treasure! Your hunt has just begun!...Now Open!Through Sep tember 7,2008. Treasure is a word that stirs the imagination of everyone of every age. An educational and entertaining exhibit for museums and science/technology centers, Treasure! explores the history of treasures and treasure hunting, the technology employed in hunting treasure, as well as the people and personalities that hunt for treasure-including your visitors. The educational purpose of the exhibition is to investigate these key ideas: What is treasure? Who hunts for treasure? Why do they hunt treasure? How do people hunt for treasure? On a personal level, the exhibit also provokes the question, what do you treasure? Treasure hunts within the exhibit invite the visitors to be active participants. Treasure! has seven thematic areas, including underwater treasure, treasures in the attic, buried treasure, gold rushes, protecting treasure, treasure in popular culture, and the modern treasure hunt. A dozen hands-on activities allow the visitor to try tools of treasure hunting and investigate treasures. Special exhibit features include actual artifacts from shipwrecks and other treasure sites. Organized by NRG! Exhibits. Locally sponsored by First Tennessee Foundation and ACH Food Companies, Inc. The Pink Palace Family of Museums occasionally places links to other websites on its own. This is done as part of our mission to "inspire learning." It is not an endorsement of the information or viewpoints you will find on the linked websites. "I Shot Ray Charles": Howard Morehead, Photographer"I SHOT RAY CHARLES" at the Stax MuseumJune 6, 2008 - D ecember 31, 2008 The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is pleased to announce that it will be home to a very special exhibit from June 6, through December 31, 2008 - "I SHOT RAY CHARLES, Howard Morehead, Photographer." This collection of some 50 images of the late, great Ray Charles features the singer, songwriter, and entertainer as captured by the distinguished photographer Howard Morehead. One of the few successful African American photojournalists to work regularly in the entertainment field, one of Morehead's favorite subjects was his friend Ray Charles. The photos in this exhibit span 40 years, depicting Charles at the peak of his career and in the twilight of his life. The show's title comes from an essay written by Morehead and discovered among his photographs that were donated after his death in 2003 to the California African American Museum (CAAM) in Los Angeles, where this exhibit originated. An opening reception for "I SHOT RAY CHARLES - Howard Morehead, Photographer" will take place at the Stax Museum Friday, June 6, 5-7 p.m. and will include complimentary hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks and a cash bar. Admission is $10 to the general public and free for Soulsville Saviors. "I SHOT RAY CHARLES" is on loan from CAAM, which recently hosted the Stax Museum's exhibit, "WATTSTAX: I Am Somebody." The photographs have been carefully selected from the more than 2,500 photos that were donated to CAAM by Fran Cooper and the Morehead estate. While many of the photos capture Charles alone in his musical empire and personal space, others show him in the company of other icons, including the famed "It's the Real Thing" Coca Cola commercial with soul mates Aretha Franklin and Billy Preston. For more than 45 years, Howard Morehead, the first West Coast staff photographer for Ebony and Jet magazines, used his camera to create dramatic images, establish faces, distill time, and capture icons in action. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, located in Memphis, Tennessee at the original site of Stax Records, is an entity of the Soulsville Foundation, the nonprofit organization that also operates the Stax Music Academy and The Soulsville Charter School. The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back AgainIn his autobiography, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again), Warhol said, "Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best kind of art." Typical of Warhol, the statement is funny, irreverent, and also an accurate description of his practice\; he called his studio the Factory, after all. He was one of the most successful artists of the 20th century because he was hard working, prolific, and had an uncanny ability to identify subjects that resonated, and continue to resonate, with a mass audience. Marilyn Monroe, electric chairs, Mao, Campbell's Soup cans, flowers, Jackie Kennedy, cows, Coca-Cola, and Liz Taylor - all vie for status as the defining iconic images of his age. This survey of 63 screen prints and five paintings includes examples of all of Warhol's best-known works

Photographs from the Memphis World, 1949-1964Curated by Chief Curator Marina PaciniExhibition sponsors: The State of Tennessee and the Tennessee Arts Commission The Memphis World, an African American newspaper published from 1931 to 1973, chronicled the complexity and variety of its readers' lives. The articles were illustrated with photographs by Ernest Withers, Mark Stansbury, Hooks Brothers Photography, and R. Earl Williams, among others. The subjects in this compelling exhibition range from a speech delivered by Thurgood Marshall in Memphis to women's organizations taking disadvantaged youth to the opera. Behind some of the seemingly ordinary images, however, is evidence of the courage, dignity, and ingenuity that citizens brought to bear on the living conditions in the Jim Crow South. Organized by the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
