Road to Freedom: Photographs from the Civil Rights Movement"Road to Freedom: Photographs from the Civil Rights Movement , 1956-1968" arrives at the High Museum of Art this month as the most significant art museum exhibition devoted to photography of the Civil Rights Movement in more than two decades. A bulwark to the Civil Rights Movement in the South, Atlanta remains a central force in its history, as shown by these more than 130 photographs-many of which have never been on public display-and their power to shape public opinion in the 1950s and '60s.

Bold ceramic pieces by Jack MoulthropVisitors to The Signature Shop & Gallery this month will fin d a collection of eye-catching, large-scale vessels greeting them at the gallery's entrance. Glazed in vibrant colors and graphic black-and-white patterns by artist Jack Moulthrop, the hand-crafted pieces of pottery will be gallery mainstays through the end of summer.

Summer Exhibition - VINaomi Silva Gallery presents its sixth annual summer group e xhibition featuring seven artists. Summer Exhibition - VI is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m and by appointment.

Working Artist Project Celebrates Atlanta Contemporary ArtistsThe Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia has partnered with the Charles Loridans Foundation to produce the Working Artist Project competition, promoting contemporary artists in metro Atlanta. Among the prizes awarded to this year's winners-Maria Artemis, Marcia R. Cohen and Matt Haffner-was a significant stipend for each to further pursue their artistic endeavors.

"Perishable Constructions" features Ephemeral Dress FormsA new exhibit at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Tr ois Gallery, "Perishable Constructions" features a new body of work by Karen Sam Norgard. Working with natural materials uncovered near the shores of western Nova Scotia, the artist creates ephemeral dress forms that she then memorializes in digital photographs. The exhibit is an extension of her ongoing series, "Women Are Everywhere."

Multimedia Installation Examines Human Rights MovementThe 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luth er King Jr. inspired the newest multimedia installation at the Savannah College of Art and Design's ACA Gallery. Carrie Mae Weems memorializes the event with "Constructing History: A Requiem to Mark the Moment." Examining the human rights movement on a global scale, Weems brings social and political injustices to the spotlight.

Atlanta History Center Celebrates Georgia's Native American Root |
Whimsical Artwork in Paint and ClayA dual show at Barbara Archer Gallery features pieces by Cha rlotte Foust and Melissa Stern. In "A Common Space," both artists invent human-like creatures using paint and clay. Subdued shades with restrained use of vibrant color give their artworks a dark, yet whimsical appeal.

Buckhead locals on display at Tew GalleriesSee paintings by Buckhead locals Jean Glenn and Shannon Nyim icz in a month-long show at Tew Galleries, which begins mid-month. Glenn, who works primarily in oils, draws much of her inspiration from nature, as seen in her organic, abstract shapes. Nyimicz creates whimsical, large-scale still-life paintings solely from memory, improvising with imagination in every brushstroke. Ceramic pieces by Linda Cares Wilkinson will also be on view. The exhibit's opening reception will be on July 18 from 6-9 p.m.

"New Black" at Studio SwanIn conjunction with the National Black Arts Festival's 20th anniversary celebration, Studio Swan presents "New Black," an exhibit of pieces by a number of talented African-American artists. Kevin Sipp and Larry Walker curate the exhibit. Sipp is the curator at the Hammond's House Museum. Walker is a veteran artist who has curated more than 90 exhibits. The exhibit's opening reception will be held on July 18 from 5-8 p.m.

Brilliantly Colored Landscapes by Ford SmithFord Smith's newest body of work at Ford Smith Fine Art demo nstrates a combination of classic pointillism and splatter techniques, resulting in brilliantly colored landscapes. The artist is known for his unique trust of the creative process\; Smith never approaches a painting with a particular idea. If his creativity feels hindered on one canvas, he moves on to the next until he becomes inspired once again.

'Dog Days' exhibit celebrates 'man's best friend'At The Signature Shop & Gallery this month, "Dog Days" cele brates man's best friend in a group show by 10 contemporary artists. The artworks pay homage to the dog in a range of forms, from realistic portraits to whimsical interpretations. Atlanta artists debuting at the gallery include Krista Grecco, Sylvia Lampen, Kirsten Stingle and Beth Tarkington.

Sculptures by former production machinist, Harry ZmijewskiCallanwolde Fine Arts Center showcases the sculptures of Har ry Zmijewski in "Production: American Work Ethic." A former production machinist and welder, the artist utilizes materials such as rusted steel and shipping pallets. Zmijewski finds inspiration in the natural and simplistic design elements of factories and warehouses. The sculptures capture the beauty of characteristically hectic environments in their moments of stillness. Opening reception 8/1, 7-9 p.m.

The artist's works feature ambiguous forms that appear to be trapped beneath the surface. To create his pieces, Blum alternates layers of pigmented wax, watercolor, resin and silk, then infuses them with distorted imagery.

The second annual Atlanta Arts FestivalThe second annual Atlanta Arts Festival returns to Midtown's Piedmont Park this month.
