RED SOX AT LA COLISEUM

LOS ANGELES -- When the Dodgers moved out of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and into Dodger Stadium in 1962 it was believed that the Coliseum -- constructed in the the 1920s for football and track and field -- would never again host another baseball game.
Forty-six years later, the Dodgers will return to the Coliseum one more time to play an exhibition game with the world champion Boston Red Sox as part of the organization's 50th anniversary celebration of its move to Los Angeles. Executives from the Dodgers and Red Sox joined local politicians and former players at a news conference, hosted by legendary broadcaster Vin Scully at the Coliseum on Monday to announce the event.

\"It's going to be so much fun next March 29,\" said Dodgers chairman Frank McCourt. \"There's already a great buzz about it. It's just a pleasure. I think Senator Mark Ridley Thomas had a great idea and we just jumped on the opportunity. It's going to be a special, special night here in LA, not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the team's arrival in LA, but the proceeds are going to go to ThinkCure, our new official charity.\"

It's estimated that the Dodgers will spend around $250,000 to build temporary dugouts for the game as well as erect a longer and larger metal curtain in left field, dubbed the \"Chinese curtain\" from 1958-61 when the Dodgers called the Coliseum home. The curtain was created to prevent pop flies from becoming home runs because the dimensions of the Coliseum made left field 251 feet away from home plate. New Dodgers manager Joe Torre remembers being enticed by the curtain when he played in the Coliseum in 1961 as a member of the Milwaukee Braves.

\"You run out of that tunnel behind home plate and you look up at that screen and you say, 'Oh my Lord, this looks like its pretty easy,'\" recalled Torre about his only series at the Coliseum. \"I've never been a pull hitter, but I tried being a pull hitter that weekend and I think I got one single that skimmed down the fence -- and I think it was off [Sandy] Koufax, but it certainly didn't hurt anybody.\"

Another former player with ties to the Coliseum is former Dodgers great Maury Wills, who, in his 1959 rookie season, helped the team win the World Series.

\"I guess I remember looking up one time at the crowd and it was 90-something thousand people,\" recalls Wills. \"I swore I'd never do that again and just concentrate on the field, because that would unnerve you.\"

\"I think that's going to be fun,\" said McCourt. \"Both for people who were here to experience Dodger baseball at the Coliseum. I think it will bring back fond memories and those who only heard about it, they will get to experience for themselves as well and I think that will be great.\"

Another person who thinks the exhibition game will be great is Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, who was a longtime Dodgers season ticket holder when he lived in Los Angeles for 30 years and made a name for himself as as a successful television producer of such shows as \"The Cosby Show,\" \"Roseanne\" and \"A Different World.\"

\"This is a great year for the Dodgers,\" said Werner. \"The Dodgers, as you know, are a historic franchise -- as important as any franchise in baseball, including the Red Sox -- and for Frank and Jamie to celebrate the 50th anniversary by playing in the Coliseum is great.\"

The Dodgers will be donating net proceeds from the game to their official charity, ThinkCure. Launched in July by the Dodgers, the McCourt family, City of Hope and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, ThinkCure is dedicated to raising funds for critical cancer research and ultimately finding a cure for cancer. The non-profit organization follows in the footsteps of The Jimmy Fund, which was started in 1948 and is one of the most enduring and successful charities of its kind and is supported by the Red Sox. The McCourt family has been associated with The Jimmy Fund since its inception when Frank McCourt's grandfather, Francis McCourt, was a part owner of the Boston Braves.

The game at the Coliseum will be sandwiched between games with the Red Sox on March 28 and 30 at Dodger Stadium. Ticket information for all three games will be announced at a later date.

\"This will be dynamite, it really will,\" said Torre. \"Just to know the history of the Dodgers coming out here, their being in Brooklyn for so many years and to have the good fortune of playing the Red Sox. I'm sort of used to playing the Red Sox for the last 12 years and to have the world champs come out here to commemorate that great date and that great event, I think is very special and I expect to see a few people in this ballpark.\"

Young's infield hit with two outs in ninth scores Furcal, lifts Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Rafael Furcal scored from second on pinch hitter Delwyn Young's infield hit with two outs in the ninth inning, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

Furcal hit a one-out single off Keiichi Yabu (0-1) and Russell Martin walked before Andre Ethier struck out. Young, batting for winning pitcher Takashi Saito, followed by grounding a 2-2 pitch between first and second. Ray Durham made a sliding stop, but his throw to first was too late. Furcal never stopped, and slid around the tag of catcher Bengie Molina to beat first baseman Rich Aurilia's throw home.

Saito (1-0) struck out the side in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

Lincecum debuts, scores go-ahead run in Giants' win

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The rain eventually went away. Tim Lincecum surprisingly came back.

Lincecum made his season debut in relief, pitching on both sides of a 1-hour, 14-minute rain delay and scoring the go-ahead run on Randy Winn's sacrifice fly to help the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 Wednesday night and avoid their first 0-3 start since 1984.

The Dodgers announced less than 20 minutes before game time that Hong-Chih Kuo would start on the mound in place of Chad Billingsley due to the threat of inclement weather. The Giants followed suit, starting Merkin Valdez and keeping Lincecum waiting in the wings.

Kuroda shuts down Padres, shows worth in MLB debut

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Hiroki Kuroda was brilliant in his big league debut, holding San Diego to three hits in seven innings and leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-1 win Friday night.

Kuroda frustrated the Padres with a mix of fastballs and sliders, plus an occasional splitter. The right-hander allowed Brian Giles' first homer of the season, but otherwise limited the Padres to two singles while striking out four and walking none.

Kuroda (1-0) also walked and scored on Russell Martin's first hit of the season, a two-run single in the seventh. A meltdown by the Padres' bullpen led to six runs that inning.

The 33-year-old Kuroda was one of the Dodgers' big offseason acquisitions, signing a $35.2 million, three-year contract in December. He spent the previous 11 seasons with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of the Japanese Central League, where he was 103-89 with a 3.69 ERA in 271 games.

The Dodgers blew it open in the seventh against lefty relievers Joe Thatcher (0-1) and Glendon Rusch, getting three singles, four walks and a sacrifice fly.

Hu's tiebreaking RBI single in ninth lifts Dodgers, hands Hoffman second loss

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Trevor Hoffman's sluggish start this season is beginning to look a lot like the end of last year.

Hoffman was charged with his second loss in his last three games, allowing Chin-lung Hu's tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Hu's hit drove in Russell Martin, who led off the ninth with a walk and went to second on a groundout. Martin scored without a throw.

Jonathan Broxton (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win and Takashi Saito got three outs for his first save.

The Dodgers took two of three from the Padres and continue their first road trip under new manager Joe Torre with three at Arizona starting Monday.

Diamondbacks 9, Dodgers 3

PHOENIX (AP) -- Mark Reynolds hit two of Arizona's four home runs Monday night, and the Diamondbacks won their home opener 9-3 over the Los Angeles Dodgers to stretch their winning streak to four games.

Orlando Hudson had a two-run homer, and Chris Young added a solo shot and an RBI single after agreeing to a six-year contract extension earlier in the day. Reynolds and Young each have four home runs in Arizona's seven games.

Dan Haren gave up three runs -- one earned -- in six innings to get his first Arizona victory. Haren (1-0), acquired in a trade with Oakland in the offseason, allowed six hits, struck out five and walked none.

Reynolds, who had homered in the ninth in Arizona's 10-inning win at Colorado on Sunday, hit a first-inning two-run shot off Esteban Loaiza some 455 feet deep into the left-field stands. His opposite-field solo homer off Chan Ho Park in the sixth barely cleared the right-field fence.

Jeff Kent drove in two runs with a homer and RBI single for Los Angeles.

D-backs' Davis beats Dodgers in last start before surgery for thyroid cancer

PHOENIX (AP) -- Doug Davis dominated on the mound Tuesday night, then looked forward to a far tougher fight.

Pitching two days before his scheduled surgery for thyroid cancer, the Arizona left-hander allowed two runs in six innings, and the Diamondbacks went on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-5 for their fifth consecutive victory.

Davis blanked the Dodgers through five innings before Jeff Kent doubled in two runs in the sixth. He struck out the next two batters, then got Gary Bennett to ground out to get out of the jam.

Byrnes' bases-loaded single lifts Diamondbacks to 6th straight win

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona can still win the close ones, too.

The Diamondbacks stretched their winning streak to six games on Wednesday with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Eric Byrnes hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the sixth-inning off Hiroki Kuroda and Micah Owings (2-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings as the Diamondbacks finished a three-game sweep of the Dodgers.

All six victories in the streak have come against NL West foes. Arizona swept three at Colorado before their home-opening series against Los Angeles.

The Diamondbacks used power hitting to beat the Dodgers 9-3 and 10-5 in the series' first two games. This time, Arizona looked like the team that went 32-20 in one-run games a year ago.

Hoffman gets Kent to strike out with bases loaded to preserve victory

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Brad Penny must wonder what's wrong when it comes to pitching against Jake Peavy. The Los Angeles Dodgers' ace couldn't even beat him on a night when the reigning Cy Young winner didn't have his best stuff.

Peavy got the best of Penny for the second time in a week, and Trevor Hoffman struck out Jeff Kent with the bases loaded to finish the San Diego Padres' 7-5 win over the Dodgers on Friday night and send them to their fourth straight loss.
The Dodgers scored once against Hoffman and put the tying run in scoring position before baseball's career saves leader fanned Kent with a changeup for his third save of the season and record 527th of his career.

Furcal, Ethier, Kemp homer as Dodgers break slump, pound Padres

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Andre Ethier went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, Rafael Furcal and Matt Kemp each hit their first homers of the season, and the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a four-game losing streak with an 11-1 rout of the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.

Derek Lowe (1-0) allowed a run and four hits over eight innings, striking out six and walking none before giving way to the bullpen. The right-hander retired 20 of his last 21 batters and also drove in a career-high three runs with a pair of singles to improve his record against the Padres at Dodger Stadium to 4-0. He is 0-3 in seven starts at Petco Park.

Chris Young (1-1) threw 80 pitches in three-plus innings, allowing seven runs, seven hits and four walks. The right-hander, who had the lowest opponents' batting average in the majors each of the previous two seasons, retired only nine of the 21 batters he faced. One of the runs against him was unearned, the result of his own fielding error.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Greg Maddux didn't stick around to talk about his 349th career victory. He left the clubhouse right after the final out to catch a plane for Las Vegas, where his family is no doubt planning a celebration for his 42nd birthday.

Maddux allowed two hits over five innings and combined with four San Diego relievers on the five-hit shutout, using Paul McAnulty's fourth-inning sacrifice fly to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 on Sunday.

McLouth stuns Saito, Dodgers with two-out, three-run HR in ninth

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Nate McLouth had one more chance to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, and he did it against one of baseball's top closers.

McLouth hit a three-run homer off All-Star Takashi Saito with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the stunned Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 Monday night for their fourth straight victory.

\"It doesn't matter how we won the game. It just happened to be that way tonight,\" McLouth said. \"We
