The music of Tuva's sheep and reindeer herders is best known for \"throat singing,\" the ability of singers to produce multiple notes (a fundamental pitch plus overtones) at the same time and even to sing more than one melody simultaneously. Throat singing is intricately linked with the forbidding natural environment in which it is made, and with the horses that have enabled Tuvans to live in that environment. Huun Huur Tu (Tuvan: x¸n x¸rt¸) literally means \"sun propeller,\" indicating the vertical separation of light rays that often occurs just after sunrise or just before sunset. For the members of Huun Huur Tu, the refraction of light that produces these rays seems analogous to the \"refraction\" of sound that produces audible harmonics in Tuvan throat-singing
