he Department of Transportation has a staff of over 4,000 that oversees one of the most complex urban transportation networks in the world. Our staff manages approximately 5,800 miles of streets, sidewalks, and highways and 789 bridge structures, including six tunnels. DOT staff installs and maintains over 1.3 million street signs, traffic signals at more than 11,900 signalized intersections, over 300,000 streetlights, 69 million linear feet of markings, and approximately 63,000 parking meters. DOT promotes the use of sustainable modes of transportation. We design bicycle facilities, bus lanes, and public plazas. We operate the Staten Island Ferry, which serves over 19 million people annually, oversee ferry operations on City-owned piers, and administer a Citywide program advancing the use of alternative fuels. We educate students and adults Citywide about street safety. Our staff issues parking permits to people with disabilities, not-for-profit agencies and governmental entities, and commercial vehicle permits for trucks; issues construction permits for work in City streets; and manages the City's Adopt-a-Highway program.
