Conference registration will be available in the beginning of February, 2007. Please submit your proposal to hcchien@hcchien.org in the following format, We will arrange the schedule of the conference after we receive all of the submission. * subject: * tutorial (3 hours long)/ session (1-1.5 hours) * speaker: * abstract: "After Australia and Israel, Taiwan is the third country to run OSDC (Open Source Developer's Conference, OSDC.tw). Although there are many things to improve when we first hold the conference last year, but the event was a big hit. Come with an open mind and we'll explore the limitless frontiers of awesome programming. Chris is a programmer working for Performics. He's also an anti-language-zealot. He hates debating why some awesome language is better than some other awesome language. He'd rather spend his time doing fun things. His website is at http://lonelylion.com/. Intro to Catalyst: Columbus Emerging Technologies SIGTITLE: Introduction to CatalystRSVP: cdaniels at iccohio dot com by June 25 ABSTRACT: Perl has been a popular choice of web developers for many years, even though there was no standard web application framework for it! Now Catalyst is a powerful, new way to write Perl for the web. Catalyst combines the concision of Perl with the robustness of an MVC architecture like Rails or Struts. And it's all open source software.

Derroit Perl Mongers and Dynamic Languages groupHello all,The Detroit Perl Mongers was restarted last year after several years or dormancy. The last year has seen a steady group of dedicated people meeting most months to talk about all things Perl related. Last month we celebrated the first year of the new Detroit Perl Mongers with a beer and BBQ social that was a huge success. But frankly we want more from our group. We want more people at our meetings and more people volunteering to present. Detroit.pm never limited itself to Perl only presentations but somehow that's all we ever had. How did that happen? :) So we have a new group that will encompass all dynamic languages. That means Perl, Ruby, Python, Lisp, Scheme, PHP, ActionScript, and anything else you can think of. What we don't have is a new group name yet, so we'll leave that to our next meeting. Meetings will still be hosted by ePrize. Out next meeting is Tuesday, October 16th at 7pm. Chad Carr will present, Building Lisp web applications using HUNCHENTOOT. "A modern web application framework built in Common Lisp, HUNCHENTOOT allows very rapid development, as well as tight integration with development tools, remote debugging, and dynamic code deployment." And if Lisp isn't your thing, Ken Fox will be presenting on tied objects in Perl. I think both presentations will be very interesting! The meeting location is One ePrize Drive, Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069. The meeting starts at 7pm with food provided by ePrize. Please RSVP to todd.chapman@eprize.com so we can be sure to order enough food for everyone. Todd Chapman todd.chapman@eprize.com Software Engineer ePrize

Chicago Uniforum: The JavaScript RenaissanceThe JavaScript Renaissance Part I: The Core LanguageWhat co mes to mind when think of JavaScript? Broken web sites, browser incompatibilities, and brittle spaghetti code? It doesn't have to be this way anymore! In this presentation, we'll take a focused look at some of the most powerful and under-appreciated features of the core JavaScript language -- prototype-based inheritance, lexical closures, and metaprogramming. We'll look briefly at what these features actually provide from a language standpoint, and then spend most of our time rolling up our sleeves and digging into real world code. In the process, we'll get acquainted with the Prototype library, and see how it extends the core JavaScript language in fascinating and clever ways. We'll finish up with a brief look at what's coming in JavaScript 2.0. by: Frederick Polgardy, Senior Consultant, Obtiva Corp.

Detroit Perl MongersThe next meeting of the Detroit Perl Mongers / Dynamic Language s group will be at 7pm on January 15th, 2008. This month's presenter is... YOU! Each attendee will present a short technique/trick they find helpful. Your presentation should be 10 minutes long or less. We want most of the meeting time to be devoted to group discussion of each tip. Chances are there will be enough discussion that we won't get to everyone, and that's okay. We will have a white board available as well as a laptop that can handle PDF, text, and PowerPoint. Please email any necessary files before the meeting or even better bring them on a FAT formatted flash drive. I think we'll have a lot of fun with this format. Questions? The meeting location is One ePrize Drive, Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069. The meeting starts at 7pm with food provided by ePrize. Please RSVP to todd.chapman@eprize.com so we can be sure to order enough food for everyone. Todd Chapman todd.chapman@eprize.com Software Engineer ePrize

YAPC::EU Tutorial: Perl Teach InTaught by Dave Crosshttp://www.yapceurope2008.org/ye2008/tuto rials.html This full day tutorial covers some of the more advanced Perl topics that might be missing from your Perl programming knowledge. By the end of the tutorial, attendees should be more confident in their Perl abilities and have a better idea of how Perl experts approach Perl programming. Topics covered include: CPAN tools, templating, ORM, testing, benchmarking and object oriented Perl. The tutorial is aimed at people who have some Perl experience and who would like to take their Perl knowledge to the next level. Location: Kvarterhuset, Jemtelandsgade 3, DK-2300 København S, Denmark (map: http://www.findvej.dk/Jemtelandsgade3,2300)

YAPC::EU Tutorial: Test Automation with PerlTaught by Gabor Szabohttp://www.yapceurope2008.org/ye2008/tut orials.html Perl has been used for years in QA for various tasks such as preparing configuration files before the tests run and parsing log files after the test. In the past few years a lot of extensions have been added to Perl. Now, in addition to the above tasks Perl can already be used in all parts of the automatic test environment. It can be used to behave like a regular user, move the mouse and click on buttons on any application running on Microsoft Windows or to become a web client and test any web based application. YAPC::EU Tutorial: Mastering PerlTaught by brian d foyhttp://www.yapceurope2008.org/ye2008/tut orials.html I'm giving a tutorial based on my latest book, Mastering Perl, in which I try to give people practical advice about using Perl in the real world. For the tutorial I've pulled out four topics: * benchmarking and measuring performance * writing configurable programs so users don't have to edit code * logging to show debugging, error, and progress information * debugging, patching, and fixing third party code without changing the original source * error detection and reporting For this tutorial, you only need to be comfortable using Perl modules. I'm not going to get into tricky syntax or wizardly tricks. It's the stuff that normal people can use to make their normal applications easier to use and maintain. The presentation is in English, and includes a copy of the slides and a copy of Mastering Perl. Location: Kvarterhuset, Jemtelandsgade 3, DK-2300 København S, Denmark (map: http://www.findvej.dk/Jemtelandsgade3,2300)

YAPC::EU Tutorial: Practical Test-driven DevelopmentTaught by Josh McAdamshttp://www.yapceurope2008.org/ye2008/tu torials.html Test-driven Development is one of the current buzzwords of programming and while many people have trouble subscribing to the philosophy, even more have trouble actually implementing it in their day-to-day work. It is just too easy to cut a testing corner here or write this little untested subroutine there. What seems like it is saving you time at the moment, might actually be costing you time and increasing your technical debt in the long term. This tutorial briefly covers some conceptual testing discussion, but quickly moves into examples of test-driven development. The language used for the examples is Perl, though the practices and tools can be applied to other programming languages. We'll take an idea for a program, write a base-level test, make that test pass, write another failing test... over and over again until the final product is built. Then we'll move into gathering and understanding code coverage for the tests that were just written and writing more tests for edge cases. This tutorial is based on a course conducted by Stonehenge. Slides for the course can be provided upon request. Location: Kvarterhuset, Jemtelandsgade 3, DK-2300 København S, Denmark (map: http://www.findvej.dk/Jemtelandsgade3,2300)

Perl Seminar NY"Why C Matters If You Program in Perl"Steven LembarkWe all know that Perl 5 is written in C. But most Perl programmers don't really need to think about that fact because (a) Perl masks all the gnarly parts of C\; and (b) Perl is so great at doing what it does. But there are times when knowing how C makes Perl what it is can affect the way you write your Perl programs. In what circumstances would you write your Perl differently knowing how C underpins the Perl you're writing?

Italian Perl WorkshopPerl. It (Italian Perl users) and Pisa.pm (Pisa Perl user group) , in cooperation with IIT-CNR and with the patronage of Comune di Pisa, are organizing the 5th edition of Italian Perl Workshop (IPW 2009). The conference will be held in Pisa, at the "Area di Ricerca" (Research Area) of the CNR (National Research Centre) on 22 and 23 October 2009. http://maps.google.es/maps?hl=es&q=%22Area+della+Ricerca+CNR%22,+Italia,+Pisa%0APisa,+Italia&ie=UTF8&ll=43.71859,10.42285&spn=0.006514,0.011415&t=h&z=17 This is a non-profit event and is the national conference on the Perl language and related technologies. This Workshop aims to be an opportunity for Perl users to meet each others, both professionals and amateurs. It's also a great occasion for people who don't know about Perl but want to know something more about its features, its culture and the community around it. The event is free. YAPC::BrasilWe are proud to announce the YAPC::Brasil 2009, to be held fro m 30/October to 1/November in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We have humble goals this year: to put forth the greatest YAPC::Brasil ever, celebrate the Joy of Perl among ourselves, and tempt everyone else to join us in developing the programming language that has the happiest users! We hope to deliver expertise in all levels, from introductory workshops {say "hello Perl!"} to perlguts, SMOP, Reaction and Metaprogramming - to list a few - and also a good number of slots for lightning talks to encourage newcomers! Niterói holds one of the highest Human Development Indexes (HDI) of the country, and stays just a 15-minute ferry boat ride away from the famous, infamous and glamorous Rio de Janeiro. If you happen to be nearby, hop aboard and come join us! More information: http://yapcbrasil.org.br/2009 http://twitter.com/yapcbrasil #yapcbrasil09 organizacao@yapcbrasil.org.br

London Perl Workshophttp://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2009/The theme for thi s year is Beginning Perl, which can be taken as Perl for beginners if one so wishes, or aimed at people new to Perl who are fluent in another language, or in fact any variant theme that one can conjecture including beginning a CPAN module, projects that are fun/welcoming/reliant on beginners (and also we expect some of you to ignore this all together and submit as you feel).
